TENCH (Tinca Tinca)I'm determined to catch more of these elusive beasts this coming summer and I want all the ammunition I can get, starting now.
So please, all you successful Tenchers out there, lend me your bullets of wisdom.
I've decided to concentrate on a small "secret" Tench pool I've discovered, that way I know they're actually down there as opposed to grazing half a mile up the canal.
Come to think of it, shouldn't there be a folder for each Scottish course species?

I would float fish and accurately Plumb the depth so I could lay my bait hard on the bottom. I use 2or 3 Maggots on a size 14/16 hook.
Groundbait frequently with a Secret mix of breadcrumb and other ingredients.
I have had loads of good Tench from the F&C Canal near Twechar.

Thanks Davy, but you left out the most important part, the contents of your "secret" mix. I know I could devise my own secret mix and God knows I've tried, but they all turn out to be crap secret mixes.
I've done the depth plumbing thing, caught them that way, but what I'm seeking is consistency of method and success.
If you don't want to surrender your secret, is there perhaps something I can buy off the shelf that you've found to be a consistent winner?
Thanks in advance.

Monklands canal, I used to be a member of the Monklands course angling club and know there is a good head of Tench in the canal. Also holds lots of Roach, Bream and Carp.

That's the place Garry, also further down way beyond the park. Float fish with the bait (Maggots) close to or on the bottom.
Groundbait, use a mix of Breadcrumb and Van Den Eynde Expo groundbait.

fished the monklands canal many times but never caught any tench at the blairhill stretch.had some success with the carp in the canal.
the fishing has been poor on the carp front for a while, rumor has it that many fish have been given new homes!!!!
i fish with either bread or sweetcorn on simple float tackle.nothing to fancy.
scottish script would your pond be the one milngavie? if it is i have fished it many a time.no monsters in the pond i have some just over 3lb.but most run to 1lb mark the pond is so small most of the tench are stunted in growth.
good luck.

its called
Auchinstarry Quarry, Kilsyth
This is a big semi-circular stone wall which is unmissable as you enter Kilsyth from Cumbernauld or Croy. The quarry flooded many years ago and now holds rudd, roach, pike and tench. The tench are as close to uncatchable as any fish in Scotland.
This is a local council water and the fishing is free. Rock climbers also use the site, and there is often a snack bar there.
There is parking on site and about 20 pegs are on offer. The water is gin clear and the bank slopes off very gradually to about 20 metres where it plummets. The water is extremely deep at the quarry wall. In summer the shallows can get quite weedy.
Normal tactics include long pole if there is enough depth and waggler on shallower pegs, fishing on the drop. The rudd and roach are mainly small, but there are some decent rudd in particular. This is yet another underused fishery.
Some of the local cognoscenti congregate there on weekend evenings, and they are partial to the odd glass of tonic wine. It is however possible to fish within feet of the car park, right beside the climbers. This might be the right tactic for single anglers in the evening.
Security: Verging on dodgy. This place is getting worse, and once was ok. The local Buckfast Appreciation Society can make this a no-go area. The rock climbers don’t get much hassle, since they are always in numbers. They are also your witnesses!
i got this info from the csac site
hope this helps!!

I used to fish this quarry before they burned down the bridge to the island.
Used to get lots of tench of the back of the island and i've seen pike to over 15Ib come out.Never had any probs with the locals but i have'nt fished it for 3/4 years.

ReplyI have seen a 4 pounder come out of here while on a break from fishing the basin across the road. As far as tactics go i prefer to fish two rods on buzzers using redworm and corn cocktails or a bunch of red maggots as hookbait. I have a rake which i use on the canal but if not required i just put a bed of crumb, maggot and hemp down and fish the two rods over it.

caught a good sized pike 1st time i fished the Auchinstarry Quarry but sadly no scales, 2 guys i met quite rated the place for the tench and fished the right side of the island.
Iv never fished for tench but think i will put in a bit of effort at my local part of the forth and clyde canal due to the popularity the species got last year and will try out some of your bait methods and tactics this year, lets see how we get on

Anyone catching Tench on the F&C? And if so where and using what method?

Had a 4lb 8oz Tench from the F&C near Twechar a couple of weeks ago. I tend to use bread baits on the canal in the summer months with a bread and crumb based groundbait, this catches some good quality Roach as well as the possible Tench.
