Small Rapala Minnow type plugs in brown trout pattern are essential for Awe (use a 15lb wire trace because the Pike don't distinguish between trout and pike baits). There have been some excellent fish, including the old record Brownie taken on this same lure over the years, so it's well worth having. Other than that, long range feeder tactics with wasp grub or single maggot can score pretty well. Air injected lobworms on a running leger rig can be deadly also.
If Rainbows are your thing, use fluoro green Berkley Powerbait. I take a small piece of cork, which I cut to the size of a pea and then I slide it onto the shank of a size 8 longshank hook. Make sure the barb is clear and unhindered by the cork. Glue the cork in place if it helps. Now mould some of the powerbait round the cork and lob it out. The Rainbows love it.
